... but learning how to dance in the rain."
Could this quote be any more fitting for 2020? Faith and spirituality don’t immune us from the challenges, rather they help us move through them with grace. And, yes, grace can include a few f-bombs or moments of anxiety.
If you are feeling that too… you are not alone. Whether it’s career and money uncertainties or relationships woes from too little or too much time together… I hear you. For some, this can bring on bouts with anxiety.
Allow me clarify that anxiety isn’t a weakness. In fact, in those moments of anxiety, turning up and doing stuff takes strength. At the same time, I want to bring up the importance of staying level during these ever-adjusting times for your physical, emotional, and mental health and well-being. And when grounded and balanced, you are better able to weather the rumblings and waves of uncertainty as the world adjusts and resets in the new normal (once the rumblings and dust settles). So how do we do this when that important zoom call drops or you're told you are being furloughed from your job? Start by taking a moment... to see and observe before reacting. And stay flexible in your plans. From plans for children and students for the upcoming school year to updated workplace protocols, allow yourself to be fluid and flow with awareness of your present circumstances... which leaves you more open to your intuition... which opens you to solutions or (at least) a plan of action. Let’s face it, living in your faith is always easier when life is going smoothly… when you’re in your comfort zone. Living in gratitude is easier when we can attend our favorite ball game... And when we can't, we can meet up with friends at the local pub to watch it together. Or when we can go to the gym and sweat to the oldies without worrying about the breaths and sweat of the person next to us. In 2020, our “old” comfort zone (along with the 5-second food rule) became a thing of the past. Invoking faith in your “Source” (however you define it) and listening through moments of stillness through prayer and meditation will bring practical guidance of where to turn, who to talk to, etc, … and then it’s up to you to take action and lean into those insights.
Which brings me to my final point... finding or creating little magics in your life's real-time story. Maybe it’s getting up earlier to enjoy a cup of coffee as the sun rises… or before others in your household rise. Maybe it’s taking a walk in the mornings before starting your workday. Maybe it's doing a 5-minute tapping (meditation). Or maybe it's taking an online course. Create that niche of your day for joy for yourself amongst all the upheaval and uncertainty…. something that inspires you and you can enjoy on a daily on an almost daily basis.
In a time of feeling "some big things" are out of our control, we have the control of creating these small magical moments. And that open us to other magical moments that did't seem possible. What you’ll find is that it not only brings a sense of calm… but it infuses us with a practical hope for continuing to move forward with more clarity, courage, and confidence. Blessings.
