"Broken crayons still color."

Once upon a time...
I would get so excited breaking open a new box crayons. I would marvel at the seemingly perfect tips on each crayon. I would even color at angles of the tip to preserve that perfect tip. (Okay, I guess that was just me.) And after finishing each use, I would carefully put each in the box they came in to preserve them for their next use.

But over time and use, crayons are no longer new as we allow ourselves to color with them with more vigor changing the shape of the tip…. even at times dropping and eventually breaking one. And what did we do with that crayon? Did we put it back in its pieces in the protective box it came in? My guess is that if you were like me, the broken crayon was put in a can or container with other broken crayons who’s paper labels were torn or even removed.

So here is the question… does that broken crayon still color? Can this crayon actually do more once it has been broken and stripped of its label?

Maybe you've felt broken… a broken dream of what you thought you might have been. Maybe your career was derailed by something out of your control… or even something that resulted from a decision you made. Maybe you didn’t graduate or go to college. Maybe you experienced an ending to a marriage and find yourself single again in a community that is seemingly paired off like Noah’s Ark. Or maybe you experienced a “Jerry Springer-like” holiday with your family… unlike those Hallmark Holiday movies that wrap everything up with the perfect wrap and a perfect bow. Psst...guess what? Even in those Hallmark movies… the plot includes the strife or seemingly brokenness that the main character is facing…..

…. But back to the crayons.

Like crayons, we were not created to be forever “perfect”… rather perfectly created to be molded by our life’s experiences with seemingly imperfections that enable us to fulfill our purposes in our lifetime. And as we have the courage to go after our desires in fulfilling our purposes in life, we ALL face breakages. It is part of the human experience. And when feeling vulnerable from the breakage, we might question our worthiness for the good in life…. whether we are enough for not only attaining it but rightfully deserving of the good life has availed us.

Broken crayons have a greater knowledge, a greater capacity. When a crayon breaks, it multiplies.… It can reach more people. Two people can use that same crayon to color their worlds with the color (and the wisdom) that the crayon provides (through their words in a video, a book, or a blog). Stripped of its paper sleeve, it’s rid the label that no longer confines and defines it. The edge where a crayon is broken can create a finer edge for creating a sharper line for greater clarity. Dragging a naked blue crayon on its side across a clean white paper can create a beautiful sky or water backdrop for the picture you are conveying or communicating. You can’t do that with a crayon with a “perfect” tip that is donning its paper sleeve and label.

And broken crayons can be melted down and create beautiful art. And when melted with the other crayons in "the tin", they can blend together through a beautiful world of understanding and empathy.

So YES! Broken crayons still color.... with vibrancy!
